Background

Cambo Box is a popular Cambodian-inspired fast casual restaurant located in New Brunswick, NJ.

Founded in 2018, Cambo Box is hoping to bring Cambodian flavors and culture into a market that is lacking representation. They specialize in Cambodian sandwiches and rice boxes with a modern twist.

I worked with the owner on creating a brand style guide and responsive website redesign.

You can view live website here!

Business Goals

From meeting with the owner, Eric, to learn more about his business and customers, I identified the following main goals for the website.

Information Architecture

Ensure all information can be conveniently found where users expect them to be.

Integration with other platforms

Ability to be redirected and order on food delivery and catering platforms.

Visual Design

Embodies the modern meets traditional atmosphere that Cambo Box is known for.

Comparative Analysis

We looked at other establishments in the food industry that identifies as fast-casual restaurant and/or traditional meets modern.

A few things stood out that were present on all 3 sites.

A large image of what they serve is displayed once user lands on the homepage.

Large Visuals

Unique stories touches customers. These businesses share their mission and values on their website.

Background & Value

Information Architecture

Working with the owner, we listed out everything that needs to be on the site.

  • Menu

  • Location

  • Opening hours

  • Phone Number

  • Story/Background

  • Instagram

  • Links to food delivery services

  • Link to catering site

Starting with a low-fidelity sketch, I split the information into these tabs:

Home:

One scrollable page that includes restaurant information: Menu, Location, Hour, Our Story, Embedded Instagram gallery

Menu:

Same information as the "Menu" section on home page, but on its own page

Location:

Same information as the "Location" section on home page, but on its own page

About:

Same information as the "About" section on home page, but on its own page

Call:

Allows users to call the restaurant without having to input the number

Catering:

Links to a 3rd party catering platform

Instagram:

Feedback

Through contextual inquiry, I quickly discovered that by having so many tabs, it was creating more work (more clicks) for users to find what they are looking for. Since there isn't much content on the site, I condensed the tabs into:

Next Steps

Next Steps

For next steps, I would like to create a "featured" section for articles that were written about Cambo Box. Also incorporating more color options in the style guide.

Takeaway

What captures a users eyes and turn them into a potential customer is inviting visuals, a welcoming tone, as well as a unique story behind the business. As I continue to work with different brands in different industries, I look forward to learn more about each user group and to create a product that is uniquely for them.
